Welcome to Hiyot

Hiyot (which means 'Life' in Amharic) is an Israeli non-profit organization that was founded in 2001 by educated Ethiopian Israeli women that work in the social service field.
Hiyot's vision is to see the Ethiopian Israeli community integrated into all aspects of Israeli society.

The aim of Hiyot is to respond to the difficulties faced by the Ethiopian Israeli community, while simultaneously being attuned to the community's cultural background - a background with which the women involved in Hiyot are personally familiar.

The founders, committed to their community and their role as its future leaders, have taken responsibility for addressing the myriad of educational, social, economic and other problems that continue to plague the Ethiopian-Israeli community.  The founders of Hiyot are truly a part of both the immigrant community and mainstream Israeli society and are therefore able to bridge the cultural gaps and work to integrate the immigrants into mainstream society and improve their quality of life.

With a background in education, they began to assist Ethiopian families and to empower them to overcome the barriers that restrict them from contributing fully as equal members of society.

Hiyot Guiding principles are:

·    Leaders from within the community are better positioned to assist the community in the best possible way.

·    The Ethiopian community must be served with greater sensitivity to its unique culture and special needs.

·    It is necessary to look at the needs of the family as a whole and to empower each member, particularly in regards to children and youth.
